Bassett married Angela Brasher in the Salt Lake Temple on December 20, 1989. The couple would go on to raise five children together. Their partnership supported his extensive career in business and his lifelong commitment to full-time Church service.

After graduating from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in accounting, Bassett entered the wholesale auto auction industry. He served as controller at Brasher's Sacramento Auto Auction before becoming the owner and chief financial officer of West Coast Auto Auctions, Inc. His business acumen allowed him to successfully operate facilities across California, Oregon, Nevada, and Idaho.
