Margaret Eleanor Hayes
1941 – 2024
Margaret Eleanor Hayes, known to nearly everyone as Maggie, passed away peacefully at her home in Burlington on the evening of June 14, 2024, at the age of 83. She was surrounded by the family she built her life around.
Born March 22, 1941, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Maggie grew up the eldest of four children in a house that was always full of music and books. She trained as a nurse at St. Mary's School of Nursing and spent forty-one years in the maternity ward at Burlington General, helping more than five thousand babies into the world.
Maggie loved deeply. She married Robert in 1964, and the two of them shared sixty years together: long Sunday breakfasts, garden arguments over tomato varieties, and dancing in the kitchen to whatever was on the radio. She loved her children fiercely and her grandchildren even more, if that is possible. She believed that a clean kitchen and a warm cup of tea could fix nearly anything.
She is survived by Robert, her children Sarah, James, and Eleanor, six grandchildren, and a sister, Jane Hayes-McKenna of Halifax. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Andrew's Church on Saturday, June 22, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Burlington General maternity ward, where Maggie spent so many of her happiest working years.
