General Authority Seventy and Missionary Dept. Director
A dedicated spiritual leader who oversaw a period of historic global growth for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder W. Mark Bassett died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 59. As a General Authority Seventy and Executive Director of the Missionary Department, he was known for his steady faith and a lifetime of service that began in the mission fields of Guatemala.
The defining test of that steady faith came decades earlier in the high mountains. At age 15, Bassett was on a youth campout when a sudden lightning storm struck and mortally injured their adult leader. Thrust into an immediate crisis, the teenager gathered the other young men, leading them to safety and guiding them in prayer. That early capacity for spiritual composure and direction, as noted by BYU Speeches, set the foundation for a man who would eventually direct tens of thousands of young missionaries through global challenges.
Before his full-time ministry, Bassett built a career in the wholesale auto auction industry. After graduating from Brigham Young University in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in accounting, he served as controller at Brasher's Sacramento Auto Auction. He later functioned as the owner and chief financial officer of West Coast Auto Auctions, Inc., operating facilities across California, Oregon, Nevada, and Idaho. This extensive business acumen and accounting background informed his highly practical approach to Church administration.
Yet his singular pursuit remained missionary work. His own service as a young missionary in the Guatemala Guatemala City Mission from 1985 to 1987 shaped his lifelong trajectory. He later returned to the field to serve as president of the Arizona Mesa Mission from 2007 to 2010. Sustained as a General Authority Seventy on April 2, 2016, Bassett served in Area Presidencies across Brazil and North America, but his most significant impact came when he was appointed Executive Director of the Missionary Department. Under his leadership, the department experienced a period of historic growth, overseeing record-breaking numbers of missionaries serving worldwide, according to LDS Daily.
Bassett's leadership was characterized by a theology of profound hope, a perspective he shared during a 2023 General Conference address. "As we move forward with faith in Jesus Christ, the fourth day will always come. He will always come to our aid or to raise our hopes back to life," he taught. This reverent optimism mirrored the "great faith" highlighted in an official statement from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which noted he would be deeply missed and always remembered for his dedicated service.
Bassett, who married Angela Brasher in the Salt Lake Temple in 1989 and raised five children, remained actively engaged in his ministry until the very end. Just six days before his sudden passing, he delivered his final public address to missionaries at the Provo Missionary Training Center. His final charge to those young men and women, recorded by Church Newsroom, crystallized his life's work: "Invite everyone to come, and do everything you can to help them enter this beautiful gate which leads to eternal life."
He leaves behind a legacy defined not by administrative titles, but by an unwavering commitment to gathering others. He will be remembered as a steady hand in sudden storms, a leader who combined practical business wisdom with profound spiritual conviction. Above all, his life stands as a testament to the power of reverent optimism, remembered by the tens of thousands of missionaries he directed and the countless individuals he spent his final days actively inviting to find peace.

I went to La Sierra High School with Mark. I was not a church member (yet) but always remember him being kind. Saddened to hear of his passing at such an early age.
Pres. Mark Bassett telephoned me while my son was serving a mission under him. He asked a few questions an I explained our lives, the abuse, etc. He was so very kind and considerate. He was IN TUNE with the Holy Ghost and like the Savior, followed the SPIRIT OF THE LAW, not the letter. I will forever be grateful my son served under him and got to strengthen his testimony under Pres. Bassett's tutelege. May Sis. Bassett & family KNOW they were his support motor, and how much he loves and cares for them. Thank you for sharing him with us🙏🙏🙏. Besos ❤❤❤
