In 1970, Towner co-founded the groundbreaking group Oregon with Paul McCandless, Glen Moore, and Collin Walcott after leaving the Winter Consort. The group issued influential records mixing folk music, Indian classical forms, and avant-garde jazz-influenced free improvisation throughout the 1970s.

Towner began his long relationship with ECM Records with the 1973 album "Trios / Solos." He was one of the earliest artists signed to the groundbreaking label, which released virtually all of his non-Oregon recordings. ECM's spacious production style perfectly complemented his contemplative compositions.
