After growing up in Seattle as the daughter of Chinese immigrants, Marie Woo enrolled at the University of Washington to study under the renowned Swiss ceramicist Paul Bonifas. Her time in the program allowed her to master the fundamental chemistry of glazes and the precision of the potter's wheel while navigating her identity as a Chinese-American artist in the post-war era. This formative education culminated in her 1954 Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, providing the technical rigor that would eventually lead her to the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art.
