American musician, co-founder of Slave and Aurra
Steve Washington, the visionary multi-instrumentalist, producer, and bandleader who co-founded the influential funk bands Slave and Aurra, has passed away at the age of 67 on February 1, 2026. Washington's profound creative drive shaped the sound of late-1970s and early-1980s funk and R&B, leaving an indelible mark on American music. Known affectionately by his bandmates as “Fearless Leader,” his innovative approach to funk blended raw energy with sophisticated arrangements and emerging electronic textures.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in East Orange, Washington was immersed in music from an early age. As a teenager, he honed his skills touring with the Exciting Williams Brothers band and opening for The Ohio Players, gaining firsthand experience with professional musicianship and the commercial peak of funk. In the mid-1970s, he co-founded Slave in Dayton, Ohio, serving as a trumpeter, keyboardist, and a conceptual force behind the group's musical direction. Slave quickly rose to prominence, scoring a string of R&B classics including "Slide" in 1977, followed by "Just a Touch of Love" in 1979, "Watching You" in 1980, and "Snap Shot" in 1981.
In 1981, Washington, alongside several other Slave members, departed to form Aurra. As Aurra's principal architect, he was instrumental in writing, producing, arranging, and performing on the group's recordings, often showcasing his versatility across multiple instruments. Aurra achieved significant success on the R&B charts with hits such as "Are You Single," "Checkin' You Out," and "Make Up Your Mind." His ability to anticipate shifts in popular music, bridging classic funk with disco polish and early boogie innovation, was a hallmark of his career.
Beyond his work with Slave and Aurra, Washington also contributed his expertise to the P-Funk world, playing and producing on several projects for George Clinton. His enduring legacy is evident in the continued influence of his work, which has been regularly sampled by hip-hop artists for decades, introducing a new generation of fans to the glorious sounds of funk's golden era. Steve Washington's contributions to funk and R&B music will be remembered and celebrated by fans and musicians worldwide.
