Stanley J. Gerzofsky
American Politician
Stanley J. Gerzofsky, a dedicated public servant and former state senator from Maine, passed away on January 21, 2026, at the age of 81. Gerzofsky was a lifelong resident of Brunswick, Maine, and a staunch advocate for his community throughout his extensive political career. He was known for his commitment to his constituents and his work on issues ranging from public safety to economic development. His passing was confirmed by friends and colleagues who remembered him as a man with a "Senate-sized personality" and a deep care for the well-being of ordinary people.
Born in New York City on December 18, 1944, Gerzofsky's family eventually settled in Brunswick, where he would spend the remainder of his life. Before entering politics, he worked as a furniture manufacturer. His public service began in 2000 when he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives, representing Brunswick. He served in the House until 2008, when he successfully transitioned to the Maine State Senate, representing District 24. He served in the Senate until he was term-limited out in 2016.
Throughout his legislative tenure, Gerzofsky was a leading voice on several key issues. He was a strong advocate for dam safety and served as co-chairman of the Legislature's Criminal Justice and Forensic Mental Health Services Oversight Committees. He was instrumental in the redevelopment of Brunswick Landing and Brunswick Executive Airport, and was a key sponsor of the bill that led to the establishment of the Southern Maine Community College campus at Brunswick Landing. In recognition of his contributions to the town, a road in Brunswick Landing was named "Gerzofsky Way."
Gerzofsky was also known for his nuanced stance on gun control, a hunter and gun owner himself, who nevertheless supported measures like background checks for private gun sales and opposed NRA-backed legislation. He also championed labor rights and cared deeply for the less fortunate. His dedication to public service and his impact on the Brunswick community and the state of Maine will be remembered by many.
