A cornerstone of the Chicago heavy music scene for nearly four decades, Shaun Glass, the versatile guitarist and songwriter who bridged the gap between underground death metal and mainstream rock success, died on July 1, 2026, at the age of 55.

Born and raised in Chicago, Glass made that city the center of everything he did. He co-founded Broken Hope in 1988 as the band’s original bassist, helping launch a death metal outfit that would become one of the defining names in the city’s underground. On Broken Hope’s debut, Swamped in Gore, he was part of the raw, punishing sound that helped establish Chicago death metal as its own force, not just a regional echo of something larger.

What made Glass unusual was not that he moved between styles, but how naturally he did it. In 1997, he co-founded SOiL with former members of Oppressor, stepping from the gore-soaked underground into hard rock and alternative metal. The leap became one of those lightning-in-a-bottle turns that only make sense in hindsight. As Glass later put it, “SOiL was a lightning-in-a-bottle moment for all of us. We were just kids from Chicago, and suddenly Clive Davis is signing us. It was surreal.” Under his tenure, the band was discovered and signed to J Records by Clive Davis, and Scars went on to achieve Silver certification in the UK and major U.S. success on the strength of “Halo.”

That success did not soften his instincts. Glass often said he believed in the song before the speed: “I’ve always been a fan of the song first. You can have the fastest riffs in the world, but if there’s no hook, people won’t remember it.” That philosophy helped explain how a musician rooted in death metal could help shape a record polished enough for mainstream rock radio without losing its edge. Ryan McCombs, who sang for SOiL, remembered him simply as the force that kept everything moving: “Shaun was the engine. He never stopped pushing the band forward, and his passion for heavy music was infectious to everyone in the room.”

After leaving SOiL in 2007, Glass returned to heavier ground with Dirge Within, a project that put his aggressive guitar work back at the center. The band signed with E1 Music and released Force Fed Lies in 2009, a record that reasserted the bite in his playing. In 2014, he rebranded the project as The Bloodline and moved toward a more melodic but still heavy sound on One We Are, another chapter in a career that kept circling back to the same core question: how to make heaviness memorable.

By 2018, Glass had formed Repentance, a thrash metal band built around a rotating cast of high-profile metal musicians. He described that return to form plainly: “With Repentance, I wanted to get back to that aggressive, thrashy energy that started it all for me. It's about the raw power of the riff.” Repentance released The Process of Human Demise in 2023, with guest appearances from members of Fear Factory, and the project carried his late-career focus on force, precision, and momentum.

Glass was also a familiar figure in gear circles, working with brands such as Dean Guitars and Morley Pedals, but the equipment was always secondary to the writing. That was the through line in his career, from Broken Hope’s first blast of Chicago death metal to the polished punch of SOiL and the harder turn of his later bands. He died in Chicago, the city that shaped him and that he helped define in return. What remains is a body of work that showed how far a Chicago heavy-music lifer could travel without ever leaving the grit behind, and how a great hook could live inside the most ferocious riff of all.
