O'Brien, the seasoned counterweight to Jeff Wincott's younger partner. Hylands, the Canadian stage and screen actor whose starring role helped a homegrown police drama reach viewers on both CTV and CBS, died on July 29, 2026, at 83.

His son Luke announced the death, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It closed a career that moved for nearly six decades between off-Broadway theatre, Hollywood films, American television guest work, Canadian network drama, and the community stages of coastal British Columbia. Hylands could play menace, authority, or hard-won steadiness, and the range kept him working long after a single hit series might have defined another actor.

He was born Scott Hylands Douglas on February 27, 1943, in Lethbridge, Alberta. His mother, Ruth, worked as a nurse and mathematics teacher. His father, Walter, was killed in action in 1945 during the Second World War. Hylands attended Shawnigan Lake Boys School on Vancouver Island, then graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1964. New York came next, along with the title role in an off-Broadway production of Billy Liar in 1965. Several years with the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco gave his career a durable stage foundation.

The camera found him in Mark Robson's Daddy's Gone a-Hunting in 1969. Through the 1970s, he worked in films including Slipstream, Earthquake, and The Boys in Company C, while appearing on Kung Fu, Cannon, Baretta, Police Story, and other American series. These parts often cast him as a threatening or severe presence. Night Heat finally put that force on the side of the law.

The Los Angeles Times introduced American viewers to the Canadian-made series on the night of its CBS premiere in January 1985, naming Hylands and Wincott as its two detectives. Hylands' O'Brien was the veteran partner, with Allan Royal narrating as newspaper columnist Tom Kirkwood. The production filmed in Toronto through the night, and its four seasons produced 96 episodes through January 1989. A Canadian drama occupying both CTV and CBS gave Hylands' most familiar role a genuinely cross-border audience.

He continued moving through television worlds after the precinct closed. His later credits included NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Due South, Stargate SG-1, The Outer Limits, V, Once Upon a Time, and Wynonna Earp. In 2017, he appeared in Fargo's third season as Ennis Stussy, stepfather to Carrie Coon's Gloria Burgle. The role was another compact character turn from an actor who had spent decades giving weight to guest appearances.

Hylands also made theatre part of ordinary island life. He and his family settled on Salt Spring Island in 1990, and a Gulf Islands Driftwood profile later counted two decades of his local stage work. In 2015, as the family prepared to move to Victoria, he directed and performed in Under Milk Wood as a farewell project. He was still creating for the stage in 2021, when he performed a one-man Shakespeare-themed play that he had written. Wincott said Hylands taught him a great deal on his first major acting job by modeling preparation, professionalism, and care for the work. Hylands' survivors included his wife, Veronica, and their children, Rebecca and Luke.

Hylands' work remains in Night Heat's 96 night shifts, in the films and television episodes that drew on his formidable presence, and in the Salt Spring productions he built with neighbors. His career joined a network drama that crossed a border with the smaller rooms of ArtSpring and Mahon Hall, places where the same actor kept returning to rehearsal, language, and an audience gathered close to the stage.
