Penciled First Five Issues of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman
Achievement
In 1989, Sam Kieth collaborated with writer Neil Gaiman and inker Mike Dringenberg to launch The Sandman for DC Comics' burgeoning mature readers line. Kieth provided the pencils for the first five issues, encompassing the majority of the 'Preludes & Nocturnes' story arc, where he helped define the initial visual identity of the protagonist, Morpheus. Although he famously departed the series early because he felt his idiosyncratic, 'monstrous' style was a poor fit for the ethereal tone Gaiman intended, his contributions established the dark aesthetic that propelled the title to legendary status. This early work remains a cornerstone of modern comic history, marking the beginning of one of the most critically acclaimed series ever published.
