At the time of his selection, he was serving as the pastor of the Church of the Annunziata in Ladue, Missouri, and had previously distinguished himself as the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. This appointment ended a period of transition for the Tennessee diocese, which had been without a resident bishop since the departure of his predecessor to Louisville.
