Singer, Songwriter, and Record Producer
The voice behind the most enduring cinematic love stories of the 1990s has fallen silent. Peabo Bryson, the two-time Grammy-winning balladeer who brought a soulful elegance to Disney classics and R&B charts alike, died June 2, 2026, at the age of 75. He passed away peacefully at 5:00 p.m. ET in Marietta, Georgia, surrounded by his family.
Long before he became the definitive voice of the modern ballad, he was Robert Peapo Bryson, a boy from Greenville, South Carolina, whose childhood nickname would eventually become a globally recognized brand. His technical foundation was forged in the demanding fires of the 1960s soul scene. At just 14 years old, he began his professional career as a backup singer for Al Freeman & The Upsetters. As a teenager, he honed his craft on the road, touring the legendary chitlin' circuit with the band Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display, an experience that established the soulful discipline he would carry for six decades. According to the LA Phil, these early years provided the grit behind the polish that would later define his solo career.
Bryson's transition to a solo artist began with his debut album, titled Peabo, released on Bullet Records. However, it was his move to Capitol Records that signaled his arrival as a major force in the industry. His album Reaching for the Sky was certified Gold by the RIAA, proving that his smooth, sophisticated vocal style had found a massive audience. He refused to be pigeonholed by the industry's narrow definitions of R&B. I don't think there's anything I can't do, he once remarked. I see myself as a true Renaissance man. I don't like one-dimensional concepts of myself.
This versatility led to a golden era of duets that redefined the romantic ballad. In 1983, he collaborated with Roberta Flack on Tonight, I Celebrate My Love, a song that became a staple of R&B wedding playlists. His ability to share the spotlight while elevating his partners became his signature. This reached a historic peak in 1992 when he became the first artist in music history to have separate records topping four different charts simultaneously, spanning Pop, Adult Contemporary, Classical Crossover, and Contemporary Jazz. As reported by the LA Times, this feat remains a testament to his unique crossover appeal.
The 1990s saw Bryson achieve cinematic immortality. He won his first Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for Beauty and the Beast, performed with Celine Dion. Reflecting on his impact as a mentor, Dion noted that he made her feel comfortable as she was just learning to sing in English, calling him a symbol of joy. He followed this success with a second consecutive Grammy for A Whole New World from Aladdin, recorded with Regina Belle. These performances, as noted by AP News, cemented his status as the premier balladeer of his generation.
In his later years, Bryson demonstrated a profound resilience that matched his vocal strength. After surviving a major heart attack in 2019, he became a vocal advocate for heart health. He spoke candidly about the experience, noting that he flat-lined for nearly 30 minutes, which he joked was long enough to make friends on the other side. This brush with mortality only fueled his determination to return to the stage. He was actively touring on his Golden Touch tour, celebrating 50 years in the music industry, at the time of his passing. He was also preparing to release a new album titled Grace, produced by the legendary duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
Bryson, who was ranked No. 58 on Billboard's list of the 75 Best R&B Singers of All Time, remained dedicated to his authentic self until the end. In today's R&B market, artists are either young, longing to be young or trying to be young, he said. I'm only trying to be me. He is survived by his wife, Tanya Boniface, and their family.
Peabo Bryson will be remembered as the architect of a specific kind of musical intimacy. He possessed the rare ability to make the grandest cinematic themes feel like private confessions, bridging the gap between the grit of the chitlin' circuit and the polished heights of global pop. His legacy is not merely found in the gold records or the historic chart placements, but in the enduring elegance he brought to the American songbook, ensuring that his voice will remain the soundtrack for love stories yet to be told.
