Patricia A. Smith, lovingly known as Patti, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 9, 1953, to Walter and Ethel Sypura. She was the first daughter and third child in the family, joining her older brothers, Don and Ken.
From an early age, Patti loved school and learning. She attended Rockford College, where she earned her teaching degree, beginning a lifelong career in education. Shefound great joy in helping others learn and grow, touching countless lives throughout her years as an educator. Early in life, Patti married and became the proud mother of her two daughters, Suzanne and Kelsey, whom she lovingly referred to as her angels. Nothing brought her greater happiness than spending time with those she loved.
Like her older brother Don, Patti loved to sing. Music brought her great joy, and she sang in her church choir for many years. Her oldest daughter joined the choir alongside her when she was old enough. Some of her favorite bands were The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and Elton John. Patti also cherished the gift of friendship. She was a loyal and caring friend who maintained several lifelong friendships throughout the years. Her kind heart, warm smile, and genuine interest in others created bonds that stood the test of time.
Patti had a love for summertime and water and was happiest when she was on it, near it, or in it. She delighted in the simple things that made life special—All things Mary Engelbreit, proudly wearing stripes as often as she could, Portillo’s meals, Hackney's mushroom-Swiss burgers, cherry-flavored treats, banana Laffy Taffys, and watermelons, which found their way into both her diet and her decorations.
Family gatherings were never complete without Patti’s famous deviled eggs and beloved seven-layer salad, both made with the love and care she poured into everything she did.
Above all, Patti’s greatest joy was her grandchildren. She treasured every opportunity to be part of their daily lives, celebrating their accomplishments,
sharing in their adventures, attending their events, and creating memories they will carry with them forever. Her love for them was immeasurable, and they were truly the light of her life.
Patti will be remembered for her warm heart, her fun laugh, joyful spirit, devotion to family and friends, and the countless ways she made those around her feel loved. Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing she is healed, at peace, and in the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
