Six-time Karting World Champion

Michael "Mike" Wilson, the revered British kart racer and an unparalleled figure in the history of international karting, passed away on January 5, 2026, at the age of 66. Known affectionately as "Mike the Kart," Wilson's remarkable career saw him clinch an unprecedented six FIA Karting World Championships, a record that stands as a testament to his enduring skill and dedication. His passing marks the end of an era for a sport he profoundly shaped, both on and off the track.

Born in Barnsley, West Yorkshire, England, on April 27, 1959, Wilson began his karting journey at the tender age of 11. His innate talent quickly became apparent, leading him to make a pivotal move to Italy in 1978. This relocation, to the heartland of international kart racing, allowed him to compete as a factory driver for prestigious teams like Birel and with IAME/Parilla engines, laying the groundwork for his future dominance.

Throughout the 1980s, Mike Wilson became the undisputed king of the 135cc Formula K category, securing World Championship titles in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1988, and 1989. His fierce yet fair rivalry with contemporaries, including future Formula 1 legends like Ayrton Senna, Terry Fullerton, and Alessandro Zanardi, captivated audiences and elevated the sport's profile. Wilson's ability to consistently outperform such formidable opponents cemented his status as one of motorsport's all-time greats.

Upon retiring from active racing in 1989, Wilson's passion for karting remained undimmed. He channeled his expertise into founding his own kart chassis company, Rakama, later known as MW. His commitment to nurturing new talent was evident when a young Fernando Alonso drove an MW chassis to victory in the Junior World Cup in 1996, a significant milestone in the future F1 champion's career.

In later years, Wilson transitioned into a highly respected role as a coach and consultant, guiding the next generation of racing stars. His mentorship benefited numerous drivers who ascended to Formula 1, including Juan Pablo Montoya, Lance Stroll, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. He also served as a valued consultant for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team's Driver Development program, continuing to scout and support emerging talent until his passing. Mike Wilson's legacy is not only defined by his unparalleled achievements as a driver but also by his profound influence on countless careers and the sport itself.
