Michael Proctor, a distinguished American football quarterback known for his collegiate achievements and professional career across multiple leagues, passed away on February 12, 2026, at the age of 58. Proctor, affectionately nicknamed "The General" during his playing days, left an indelible mark on the sport, particularly through his record-setting tenure at Murray State University.
Born on July 14, 1967, in Sylvester, Georgia, Proctor developed a passion for football early in life. He honed his skills to become a formidable presence on the field, leading the Murray State Racers as a four-year starting quarterback from 1986 to 1989. His exceptional talent earned him All-Ohio Valley Conference honors in both 1988 and 1989, culminating in his recognition as the OVC Offensive Player of the Year in 1989.
Proctor's collegiate career was highlighted by numerous records, including an impressive 8,632 career passing yards and a remarkable 9,886 total yards, both school records that underscored his versatility and impact. His legacy at Murray State was further cemented in 2000 when he was inducted into the university's Athletic Hall of Fame, and his jersey number 11 was retired in his honor.
Following his collegiate success, Proctor embarked on a professional journey that saw him sign with the NFL's New England Patriots in 1990. He later showcased his talents in the World League of American Football with the Montreal Machine from 1991 to 1992, and in the Canadian Football League. Proctor concluded his professional playing career in the Arena Football League, where he was a key player for the Charlotte Rage from 1994 to 1996. Michael Proctor will be remembered for his leadership, skill, and enduring contributions to the game of football.

I have known Michael as a neighbor and as a friend for many years now. Michael, his wife and two daughters have always been close to us. We have seen them grow up become amazing women. It has become difficult to understand how such an amazing man could have left us so soon. A true void that cannot be filled. His daughters have chosen the medical field for careers, the oldest, Shayna is a nurse and his youngest Maya is attending college to become a surgeon. Knowing that he was being treated for a grave situation that showed promise for the proposed treatment, only to end with his life. This cuts deep with a wound that will heal but will always leave a scar. To you Michael, a neighbor, a friend and amazing man. R.I.P.
