Actor and Writer
Michael Patrick, the pioneering Belfast-born actor and writer known for his roles in 'Game of Thrones' and his historic performance as Richard III, died at the age of 35 following a courageous battle with Motor Neurone Disease. His passing marked the loss of a transformative talent who redefined the boundaries of disability and representation on the Irish stage.
Born Michael Campbell in Belfast, Northern Ireland, he later adopted the professional name Michael Patrick. He grew up in the shadow of the Troubles and witnessed his home city evolve into a global filming hub. His intellect first led him to study Physics at the University of Cambridge, where he also served as the head of the university's Irish Society. However, his undeniable passion for the arts prompted a shift from academic brilliance to the stage. He pursued professional acting training at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.
Patrick fully embraced the transformative era of Northern Irish culture. He appeared in the HBO series 'Game of Thrones' during Season 6, Episode 7, portraying a Wildling rioter, a milestone noted by Radio Times. His television credits expanded to include roles in the BBC police drama 'Blue Lights', the DC Comics series 'Krypton', and the drama 'This Town'. On stage, he performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in London, appearing in productions of 'Measure for Measure' and 'The Taming of the Shrew'. He also co-wrote and starred in the BBC series 'My Left Nut', a comedy-drama based on his own teenage experience with a health scare.
On February 1, 2023, he received a diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease, also known as ALS. This was a poignant echo of his past, as his father also passed away from Motor Neurone Disease when Michael was a young child. Rather than a conclusion, this diagnosis became a catalyst for his most historic work. In 2024, he became the first actor with a disability to play the title role in Shakespeare's 'Richard III' on the island of Ireland at the Lyric Theatre Belfast, according to The Irish Times. He was honored with the Judges' Award at The Stage Awards 2025 for this groundbreaking performance, as reported by The Stage. In 2025, he performed 'My Right Foot', a 70-minute autobiographical solo show about living with MND, at the Dublin Theatre Festival.
In February 2026, he chose to refuse a tracheotomy to avoid extended hospitalization, opting to spend his remaining time at home with family. He passed away peacefully at the Northern Ireland Hospice on April 7, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. His funeral was held on April 13, 2026, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Carryduff, County Down. He was survived by his wife, Naomi Sheehan, his mother Pauline, and his siblings Kate, Maurice, and Hannah. His wife remembered him with profound personal warmth, noting that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him. She described him as a titan of a ginger haired man who lived a life full of joy, abundance of spirit, and infectious laughter. Jimmy Fay, Executive Producer of the Lyric Theatre Belfast, anchored his professional importance by stating that these islands lost a great artist, and the sky was brighter with his star.
Michael Patrick left behind a legacy of defiant spirit and unparalleled resilience. He shattered the glass ceiling for performers with disabilities in Irish theater, transforming personal and generational trauma into groundbreaking art. His monumental contributions cemented his star as a permanent fixture in the Belfast skyline, forever illuminating the path for future generations of artists.
