Born on November 18, 1956, Melody McCray-Miller carried forward a family tradition of public service, being the daughter of the esteemed state legislator Billy McCray. She pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Houston and a secondary school teaching certificate from Wichita State University. These academic foundations prepared her for a diverse career that blended education, business, and political leadership.
McCray-Miller made history as the first African American woman to serve on the Sedgwick County Board of Commissioners, representing the 4th District. Her dedication to her constituents led her to the Kansas House of Representatives, where she served the 89th District from 2005 to 2013. During her tenure as both a local official and state legislator, she championed significant reforms in areas such as prevention, early childhood education, and the juvenile justice system, always striving to give a voice to marginalized communities.
Beyond her legislative roles, McCray-Miller was a successful entrepreneur, serving as President and CEO of Miller's Inc. for over two decades, a business consulting and product retail corporation known for its Miller Bake Bean products.
