Maurice Smith, 78, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, in Canton, Ohio. Born on October 28, 1947, in Enid, Oklahoma, Maurice lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication to family, faith, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from The University of Oklahoma, laying the foundation for a career built on precision and integrity. Throughout his life, Maurice remained committed to his work and community while always making time for the people and pastimes he loved most.
A devoted member of Faith Family Church, Maurice found strength and fellowship through his faith. His spiritual home was a source of comfort and connection throughout his life.
Maurice had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and could often be found hiking scenic trails or casting a line while fishing—two of his favorite ways to unwind. He also enjoyed the thrill of gambling and the refinement of wine tasting. Above all else, he cherished spending time with his grandchildren, whose laughter and presence brought him immense joy.
He is lovingly remembered by his children Walter Smith, Evelyn Smith-Harris, and Marcus Smith; his grandchildren Imari Smith and Layla Smith; his sister Naomi Carter; cousins Yolanda Barke and Jerome Barke; niece Tanya Williams; nephew Andre Williams; as well as a host of cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, and extended family who will forever carry his memory.
Maurice now joins those who passed before him: his beloved husband James Edward Smith-Johnson; his mother Ruth Mae Carter-Smith; father Henry Louis Smith Sr.; brother Daniel Marcus Reynolds-Smith; and sister Lillian Grace Thompson.
