Matt Hinkin
Chief Meteorologist
Matt Hinkin, the beloved longtime chief meteorologist at WATE-TV, passed away on Monday afternoon, March 16, 2026, at the age of 62. He was a trusted and familiar presence on television screens across East Tennessee for more than three decades, leaving a profound impact on colleagues, viewers, and the community he served. Hinkin's dedication to accurate forecasting and his warm personality made him a respected figure in local broadcasting.
A native of Lawton, Oklahoma, Matt Hinkin pursued his passion for meteorology through higher education. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University and an Atmospheric Science Degree from the University of Kansas. These academic foundations prepared him for a distinguished career in weather forecasting.
Hinkin began his broadcasting journey at stations in Missouri and Kansas, including KSNF in Joplin, Missouri, and KSNT in Topeka, Kansas. In 1990, he brought his expertise and engaging demeanor to Knoxville, Tennessee, joining WATE-TV. This move marked the beginning of a remarkable 31-year tenure that would solidify his place in the hearts of East Tennesseans.
Throughout his extensive career at WATE, Hinkin guided viewers through some of the region's most significant weather events. He was instrumental in keeping the community informed during the historic Blizzard of 1993 and the devastating Gatlinburg wildfires. Beyond severe weather, he also co-hosted the popular Saturday morning program “New at the Zoo,” which introduced younger audiences to wildlife and travel, including a memorable season filmed in Africa.
Matt Hinkin faced significant personal challenges with remarkable courage and grace. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a battle he openly shared with the public to raise awareness and offer support to others. In November 2020, he endured the profound loss of his wife, Deborah, to whom he had been married for 28 years. Despite these hardships, he remained an advocate and a source of encouragement.
Hinkin retired from WATE in August 2021, concluding a distinguished career that spanned over three decades. Even in retirement, he continued his advocacy for those living with Parkinson's disease, spreading holiday cheer at senior living facilities and engaging with support groups. A devout Christian, Matt Hinkin was widely known for his kindness, humility, and selfless spirit, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond his contributions to broadcasting.
