Attorney and Politician
Mark Weissman, a steadfast attorney and former Florida state representative known for his pivotal role in shaping the city of Parkland, passed away on April 8, 2026, at his home in Parkland at the age of 72.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Weissman relocated to Florida and laid the groundwork for his career at the University of Florida. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration before obtaining his Juris Doctor from the university's College of Law. Admitted to the state bar, he began a long career as a practicing attorney in South Florida, according to The Florida Bar. He remained deeply connected to his profession as an active member of the Broward County Bar Association and various local civic organizations.
Weissman transitioned from a local attorney to a visionary civic architect during his eight-year tenure on the Parkland City Commission. Serving as the city's Vice Mayor, he guided the nascent community through a defining period of growth. A local city official noted that his leadership during Parkland's formative years helped shape the city into the community it is today.
In 2000, Weissman scaled his local advocacy to the state level when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives to represent District 90 in Broward County, as recorded by the Florida Department of State Division of Elections. Re-elected twice, he served until 2006. As a member of the K-12 Education Committee and the Justice Council, he became a prominent advocate for the Class Size Reduction Amendment to the Florida Constitution. During his final term, he also served on the Procedures and Redistricting Committee.
Known for his dignified and respectful demeanor, Weissman earned a reputation as a gentleman of the legislature. A former legislative colleague stated that Weissman was a true gentleman of the House, a man whose word was his bond and whose heart was always with the people of Broward County. His legislative work supporting Florida's elderly population earned him the Quality Senior Living Award.
Weissman leaves behind a lasting legacy etched into the very foundation of his community and state. The early infrastructure and educational development of Parkland stand as a testament to his visionary planning. Beyond his hometown, his tireless advocacy for smaller class sizes continues to influence the Florida education system, ensuring his civic contributions will benefit generations of students to come.
