Lionel joined the Socialist Party
In 1971, Lionel Robert Jospin officially joined the newly reorganized Socialist Party (PS) following the historic Congress of Épinay. This pivotal moment saw François Mitterrand take leadership of the party, and Jospin quickly became a trusted lieutenant within the "Mitterrandist" faction. His entry into the party marked the transition from his earlier career as a diplomat and academic to a full-time political operative dedicated to unifying the French left. This commitment would eventually position him as a central architect of the party's strategy for the next three decades.
