On Friday, July 10, 2026, Lindsey Graham sat with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv and told him Washington was ready to back a tougher round of sanctions against Russia. He died Saturday night, July 11, at his Capitol Hill home. He was 71. For more than three decades in Congress, Graham had been South Carolina's most visible voice on defense and foreign policy, a lawyer turned senator who spent his final full day pushing the same fight he had waged for years.

It was one more wartime visit to Kyiv in a string of them. Graham toured the SkyFall drone facility, calling it among the most advanced production lines he had seen and warning that it "would be a big mistake" for the United States to walk away from drone cooperation with Ukraine, according to Ukrainska Pravda. He was scheduled to appear on NBC's Meet the Press the next morning. Instead, his office announced his death and asked for privacy for his family. Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk called him "a steadfast friend of Ukraine, who well understood that our struggle is a fight for freedom, democracy, and a just world order," according to the Kyiv Independent.

Graham was born on July 9, 1955, in Central, South Carolina, where his parents ran the Sanitary Cafe, a small restaurant, bar and pool hall, according to The Post and Courier. His mother, Millie, died of Hodgkin lymphoma at 52; her funeral was held the day before his younger sister Darline's twelfth birthday. Their father, Florence "Dude" Graham, died of a heart attack about fifteen months later, during Graham's first semester of law school. Barely into his twenties, Graham promised his sister he would never leave her, even as an aunt and uncle took in the thirteen-year-old to see her through school. He later adopted her so she could draw on his benefits.

After earning his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of South Carolina, Graham was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps in 1982, serving first as a defense attorney and then, from 1984 to 1988, as the Air Force's chief prosecutor in Europe at Rhein-Main Air Base in Germany. He continued in the South Carolina Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve for more than two decades afterward, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and retired as a colonel in 2015 after 33 years of total service.

He returned to South Carolina to practice law, then won election to Congress in 1994, taking South Carolina's 3rd Congressional District as its first Republican representative since 1877. In January 1999, in his second House term, Graham was one of the House Republicans chosen to argue the case against President Bill Clinton in his Senate impeachment trial.

Graham was elected to the Senate in November 2002, succeeding the retiring Strom Thurmond, and was sworn in the following January. He won reelection in 2008, 2014 and 2020, and in 2008 became the first South Carolinian to draw more than a million votes in a general election. In 2016 he sought the Republican presidential nomination, dropping out before the primary voting began.

His closest friendship in the Senate was with Arizona's John McCain, with whom he traveled to conflict zones around the world for more than two decades, according to CBS News. When McCain died in 2018, Graham eulogized him on the Senate floor. "My name is Graham, not McCain," he said. "But I feel like a McCain," according to The Post and Courier.

In September 2018, Graham took a leading role defending Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination during the Senate Judiciary Committee's confirmation hearings. He was elected chairman of that committee months later, a post he held from January 2019 to January 2021 while the Senate confirmed dozens of federal judges. "I will do my best to continue down the path charted by Senator Grassley of having a fair and vibrant committee process," he said when he was elected. He later chaired the Senate Budget Committee, elected to the post by the Republican conference in December 2024 for the 119th Congress. "I am honored to have been elected Senate Budget Committee Chairman by the Republican conference," he said at the time.

Graham had filed for a fifth Senate term and won his Republican primary weeks before he died. Announcing his death, President Trump called him "one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known." South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster called him "the fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America," according to NBC New York, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "Israel has lost one of its greatest friends," according to CBS News, tributes that traced a foreign policy record built as much in Jerusalem and Kyiv as in Washington.

Graham's Senate seat now goes to a special primary in August to choose a successor for the November ballot. But the last week of his life reads like the rest of it: a drone factory outside Kyiv on a Friday, a sanctions push he was still making on that same trip, a Sunday show booking he never got to keep. He spent 33 years in an Air Force uniform and 23 in the Senate, chaired two of its committees, argued a president's impeachment case in only his second House term, and, decades before any of that, promised to stand by the younger sister his parents' deaths left behind, and later adopted her. What outlasts him is bound up in the institutions he spent a career inside: the judges confirmed under his Judiciary Committee gavel, the budget fights he was still leading in his final term, and the sister he adopted as a young man, the one relationship that predated every office he ever held.
