In 2006, Fobbs was named head football coach at North Carolina A&T, an HBCU institution. Although his tenure was brief, his contributions to HBCU football and his role in developing generations of Black athletes and coaches made him a legend in the HBCU football community.

In 2015, Fobbs returned home to Grambling State as running backs coach, joining the staff led by his son Broderick Fobbs. The Tigers soon reemerged as a national HBCU power, capturing the 2016 HBCU national championship season — a fitting triumph for a Grambling legend.
