After his lifelong epilepsy worsened, Chown underwent brain surgery at USC Medical Center on May 2, 2013. Six days later he released the EP Light the Way to help fund his recovery, and the accompanying campaign raised nearly $25,000.

Chown helped organize the inaugural Northern Lights Music Fest at the U.P. State Fairgrounds, which drew an expected 10,000 attendees over two days. On opening night he played bass for Sebastian Bach, the first hometown show of his career; Steelheart's own scheduled set was canceled that night for health reasons.
