Dr. Katie Allen, a distinguished Australian politician and renowned pediatric allergist, passed away on December 23, 2025, at the age of 59. Her death followed a courageous battle with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of bile duct cancer. Allen served as the Federal Member for Higgins from 2019 to 2022, where she was recognized for her evidence-based approach to policy and her advocacy for medical research and climate action.
Prior to her career in parliament, Dr. Allen was a prominent medical professional, serving as a professor at the University of Melbourne and a senior research fellow at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute. She was a world-leading expert in food allergy and population health, authoring over 300 scientific publications. Her work significantly influenced global guidelines for the prevention and management of childhood allergies.
In the political sphere, Allen was known as a moderate voice within the Liberal Party, often bridging the gap between scientific reality and legislative action. She was a vocal supporter of the Australian vaccine rollout during the COVID-19 pandemic and worked tirelessly on committees related to health, aged care, and the environment. Her colleagues remembered her as a formidable intellect with a deep commitment to public service.
Dr. Allen's legacy is defined by her dual contributions to medicine and governance. She remained active in public discourse even during her illness, sharing her journey to raise awareness for rare cancers. She is survived by her husband, Peter, and their four children, who remember her as a devoted mother and a trailblazer in her field.

I appreciate the input Prof. Allen provided on a project I was undertaking on allergy awareness. I then noted the large signs near her MP office at Mt Waverley and realised she'd moved to politics & her office was around the corner from where my daughter used to work. Neither I, nor my family, we never walked into her MP office, but I'm sure she would have given us the same prompt, polite & helpful reply if we had of. I was shocked to see the signage gone one day. Then I learnt of her serious illness which at a relatively young age made me feel very sad even though I did not know her well. I guess this is for several reasons, I always feel that I wish these serious illnesses would be inflicted upon those who have done wrong, rather than someone like her who has strived immensely in many facets of life. Secondly she is not yet 60 & passed at the very age I am now. I had sent her a message of hope during her illness. I wish to convey my sincerest condolences to her family at this time. D. Hilton
I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Allen's passing. As a resident of Higgins, I always admired her integrity and her ability to bring a sensible, science-based perspective to parliament. She was a true public servant who cared deeply about our community and the future of our country. My thoughts are with Peter and the children.
The world is an empty shell without the Katie Allens who gave so much for us and inspired many more that never met her. Our deepest sympathies to her family, friends, colleagues and all who must now fulfil her vision for a better world. John
