Julius Berman, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose long life traced an arc of service and family enterprise across Georgia, died on June 28, 2026, in Atlanta. He was 95.

Born in Savannah on November 18, 1930, he spent his formative years in the small town of McRae, where he received his early schooling before going on to Georgia Military Academy and the University of Georgia, according to Dressler's Jewish Funeral Care. It was during those years that he met Joanne Shapiro, who would become his wife and lifelong partner, and the couple married soon after.

In 1953, Mr. Berman entered the United States Army and served overseas at Takeyama, Japan. By the time of his honorable discharge in 1955, he had earned the rank of Second Lieutenant.

Returning home with Joanne, he settled in Savannah and built a business of his own. His drive and work ethic eventually drew him to Augusta, where he joined the family enterprise, Shapiro Packing Co., and helped guide its growth over many years. When the company was sold, he retired to Atlanta, which would remain his home for the rest of his days, as recorded in his Atlanta Journal-Constitution obituary.

Above all, Mr. Berman measured his life in family. He was predeceased in 2011 by Joanne, his wife of many decades, and he leaves behind three children, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren who knew him as a patriarch of warmth and constancy.

Julius Berman belonged to a generation that answered the call to serve, that worked with both hand and word, and that measured success not in headlines but in the loyalty of kin.
