Jud Ashmore served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater during World War II. It was during his naval service that he discovered a passion for broadcasting, as radio was the only form of entertainment available to servicemen. After a tour with the Air Force, Ashmore joined KSAT (then known as KONO-TV) in 1968 as a weathercaster. The station switched its call letters to KSAT in 1969. While at KSAT, he also provided weather reports for KITE radio, beginning his decades-long association with San Antonio media.

In 1972, Ashmore returned to San Antonio to provide weather reports for KENS 5 television. Two years later, he teamed up with radio personality Ricci Ware for a new morning show on KBUC-AM. He became known for closing each weathercast with the signature phrase: "Hug somebody. It'll make you feel good."

After leaving KENS 5 in 1980 and KBUC when the station was sold in 1986, Ashmore joined News Radio 1200 WOAI, where he delivered weather reports until 2002. His move to radio allowed him to continue serving San Antonio audiences with his trusted weather forecasts for another 16 years.
