John Howard Riley was born and began his musical journey, learning piano at age six and jazz by 13.
Riley pursued formal music education at the University of Wales, Indiana University, and York University, earning multiple degrees.
He formed his influential trio with Barry Guy and Jon Hiseman, releasing his debut album 'Discussions' in 1968.
Riley became a member of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra and started his long tenure as an educator at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Goldsmiths, University of London.
Riley received a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, which gradually impacted his physical abilities.
His final releases included 'Constant Change,' a seven-CD retrospective, showcasing his extensive work.
Despite his illness, Riley made his last public appearance at Barry Guy's 70th birthday celebration.
John Howard Riley passed away at the age of 81.
