Criley helped launch the Los Angeles County paramedic program at Harbor General Hospital, training the first class of county and city firefighters in pre-hospital coronary care. He worked with officials to secure passage of the Wedworth-Townsend Act enabling paramedics statewide.

Criley demonstrated that a long-misunderstood cardiac finding was caused by displacement of the mitral valve leaflet rather than an aneurysm, and he gave the condition the name mitral valve prolapse that is still used worldwide.
