American Politician, Nebraska Legislator
Joel T. Johnson, a distinguished Nebraska state senator, pioneering physician, and decorated Navy veteran, passed away on January 16, 2026, at the age of 89. A retired general surgeon from Kearney, Nebraska, Johnson was renowned for his contributions to emergency medical procedures and his dedicated service to his community through both medicine and public office. His life exemplified a commitment to healing, service, and civic responsibility.
Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on July 9, 1936, Johnson was raised in the Axtell area of Nebraska, graduating from Axtell High School in 1954. He pursued his passion for medicine at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, earning his bachelor's degree in 1958, followed by his M.D. from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1961. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a remarkable career in medicine.
From 1966 to 1968, Johnson served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He provided critical care to wounded American servicemen and women aboard the USS Repose, a hospital ship operating in combat zones. This formative experience caring for the injured under challenging conditions shaped his approach to emergency medicine and instilled in him a lifelong commitment to advancing medical care for those in crisis.
After his military service, Johnson established himself as a general surgeon at Kearney Clinic, where he practiced with distinction from 1969 to 2000. He became well known for pioneering emergency medical procedures, including advanced cardiac life support protocols that would save countless lives. His work helped transform emergency medicine practices in Nebraska and earned him recognition as a leader in his field. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Medical Association.
In 2002, Johnson's commitment to public service led him to the Nebraska Legislature when Governor Mike Johanns appointed him to represent the 37th Legislative District, filling the seat vacated by Doug Kristensen. He was subsequently elected in his own right in 2002 and reelected in 2004, serving until 2009. During his legislative tenure, he served on the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee and the Health and Human Services Committee, where his medical expertise proved invaluable in shaping health policy.
Joel T. Johnson's legacy lives on through the Joel and Jill Johnson Scholarship Fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation, supporting future generations of students. He was a devoted member of First Lutheran Church of Kearney. Funeral services were held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Axtell, with burial and military honors at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery.
