Country Music Songwriter

Jimmy Ray "Jim" McBride, a revered figure in country music songwriting, passed away on January 6, 2026, at the age of 78. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, McBride's profound impact on the genre spanned decades, marked by his ability to craft narratives that resonated deeply with audiences and artists alike. His legacy is etched in the numerous chart-topping hits he penned for some of country music's biggest stars, earning him a place in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

McBride's journey into songwriting began at an early age, fueled by a childhood immersed in country music. He moved to Nashville in 1981, a pivotal decision spurred by the success of "A Bridge That Just Won't Burn," recorded by Conway Twitty. This move marked the beginning of a prolific career that would see his songs recorded by over eighty major artists, including Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Reba McEntire, and George Jones.

Among his most celebrated collaborations was his partnership with Alan Jackson, which yielded multiple number one hits. Their creative synergy produced iconic songs such as "Chasing That Neon Rainbow," "(Who Says) You Can't Have It All," and the quintessential country anthem "Chattahoochee." The latter was a monumental success, earning Song of the Year honors from ASCAP, American Songwriter, and the Country Music Association in 1994.

Throughout his distinguished career, McBride garnered numerous accolades, including 14 BMI and ASCAP Awards, and multiple nominations from prestigious organizations like the Grammys and the Country Music Association. His dedication to his craft and his significant contributions to the musical heritage of his home state were recognized with the Music Creators Award from the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1995.

In 2017, McBride's enduring influence and remarkable body of work were formally acknowledged with his induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, a testament to his indelible mark on country music. He served as a past president of the Nashville Songwriters Association International, further solidifying his commitment to the songwriting community. Jim McBride's timeless songs will continue to be cherished, reflecting a life devoted to the art of storytelling through music.
