Jacques Michel
Canadian musician and songwriter
Jacques Michel, the revered Canadian musician and songwriter whose poignant lyrics and melodies resonated deeply with generations, passed away on March 5, 2026, at the age of 84. Born Jacques Rodrigue in Sainte-Agnès-de-Bellecombe, Quebec, on June 27, 1941, he adopted his stage name early in his career, becoming an iconic figure in Quebec's musical landscape. Michel's passing followed a three-year battle with illness, culminating in his decision to seek medical assistance in dying, surrounded by his loved ones.
Michel's musical journey began at a young age, performing in cabarets by the time he was 16, where he gradually introduced his own compositions alongside covers of popular artists. His talent quickly garnered attention, leading to his first solo contract in 1963. Just two years later, he earned his first significant accolade, being named "Révélation de l'année" (Revelation of the Year) at the 1965 Festival du Disque in Montreal, solidifying his place in the burgeoning Quebec music scene.
The 1970s marked a period of prolific output and international recognition for Michel. In 1970, his song "Amène-toi chez nous" won the Grand Prix du Festival de Spa in Belgium, and he also secured a second prize at the Tokyo International Song Festival with "Un nouveau jour va se lever." These successes were featured on his influential album "Citoyen d'Amérique." His album "S.O.S." in 1971 was considered his most politically engaged work, reflecting the social and political climate of Quebec.
Another cornerstone of his career was the 1972 release of "Pas besoin de frapper pour entrer," a song that would later be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011, earning him multiple SOCAN awards. Throughout the decade, Michel released numerous albums, with over 30 of his compositions reaching the top of the French-language charts between 1960 and 2005.
In the mid-1980s, after recording seventeen albums, Michel took a hiatus from his musical career to explore the world of television. Alongside Ève Déziel, he co-created and co-wrote scripts and songs for popular children's programs such as "Le village de Nathalie" and "Sur la rue Tabaga" from 1985 to 1995, leaving a cultural imprint on a new generation.
His enduring contributions to Quebec culture were formally recognized in 2007 when he was made a Knight of the Ordre national du Québec. After a significant break from the stage, Michel made a triumphant return to music in 2015 with the album "Un nouveau jour," a collection of re-arranged hits, followed by a successful 40-show tour. His creative spirit remained vibrant, leading to the release of "Tenir" in 2019, his first album of original songs since 1982.
Michel's final concert tour, titled "Seul à seuls," commenced in 2024 when he was 83 years old, but was regrettably cut short in July 2025 due to his declining health. For over three decades, Jacques Michel had made his home on Île d'Orléans, near the majestic St. Lawrence River, a place where he chose to put down roots and which undoubtedly inspired much of his later work. His legacy as a sensitive, committed author and a highly talented melodist will continue to influence and inspire.
