Chemist and professor
Harry Conrad Dorn spent half a century at Virginia Tech pursuing some of chemistry's smallest architectures: carbon cages that could hold metal atoms and point toward new tools in medicine and electronics. Dorn, a chemist and professor emeritus known for nuclear magnetic resonance and fullerene research, died on August 6, 2026. He was 82.
The McCoy Funeral Home notice traced that direction to Riverdale, California, where Dorn farmed cotton. A science teacher showed him that professors could research as well as teach. Degrees at UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis led him to Virginia Tech in 1974.
His early laboratory work advanced nuclear magnetic resonance and dynamic nuclear polarization. An early-1990s sabbatical at IBM's Almaden Research Center opened a chapter in carbon nanoscience. With colleague Steven Stevenson, Dorn discovered a family of metal clusters enclosed in carbon cages in 1999.
Virginia Tech's Board of Visitors credited him with more than 200 papers describing roughly 125 new molecules. His group explored carbon nanomaterials for medical imaging, radiolabeled pharmaceuticals, cancer treatment, electronics, and quantum computing. He also helped Lay Nam Chang establish Virginia Tech's nanoscience program.
He advised scientists and medical students and delivered more than 300 presentations. In a Virginia Tech retirement profile, he reduced his guiding standard to two words: "Maintain integrity."
He shared 62 years of marriage with Linda Lee Collins, and their family included four sons and seven grandchildren. His work persists in Virginia Tech's nanoscience program, the researchers he trained, and a catalog of carbon molecules built to carry new possibilities inside their cages.
