Blaylock enjoyed a multifaceted career in the sport, serving as a player, coach, scout, and manager, leaving an indelible mark on several organizations, most notably the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, and Kansas City Royals.
Born on October 11, 1931, in Clarkton, Missouri, Blaylock began his professional journey when he was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1950. He spent nine seasons honing his skills in the Cardinals' farm system, where he achieved remarkable success, including a 23-win season in 1951 and accumulating 97 minor league victories before making his Major League Baseball debut on April 10, 1959. During his lone MLB season in 1959, he pitched for both the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees, appearing in 41 games. A memorable highlight of his playing career was hitting two home runs in consecutive at-bats in May 1959, which were his only major league home runs.
Following his playing days, Blaylock transitioned into coaching and management roles, contributing significantly to the development of countless players. He managed the Billings Mustangs from 1971 to 1973 and later became a scout and minor league instructor. His expertise led him to the Kansas City Royals organization, where he served as the pitching coach for the Major League team from 1984 to 1987.
