Gail Clark left Bellefontaine, Ohio, on a football scholarship, played on Sundays for the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots, and then came home and gave his town four more decades of himself. Clark died on July 3, 2026, at the age of 75.

The football story began at Bellefontaine High School, where Clark was a standout linebacker for the Chieftains from 1965 through 1968. By his graduation in 1969, his play had earned him a scholarship to Michigan State University, as Peak of Ohio recounted in reporting his death.

In East Lansing, Clark lettered for the Spartans in 1970, 1971 and 1972 and became a mainstay of the Michigan State defense. As a senior in 1972 he earned All-Big Ten honors, and his college career also brought him All-America recognition.

The Pittsburgh Steelers chose him in the fourth round of the 1973 NFL Draft, 102nd overall, according to Pro Football Archives. He broke into the league that fall with the Chicago Bears, playing 11 games as a rookie, then spent the 1974 season with the New England Patriots, appearing in 8 more. He wore No. 53 in Chicago and No. 54 in New England. In 1976 he gave professional football one last run, closing his playing days in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Plenty of athletes drift away from their hometowns once the cheering stops. Clark went back to his and stayed for good. For 40 years he served as an assistant football coach at Bellefontaine High School, mentoring wave after wave of Chieftains players in the program where he had once starred. He matched that commitment away from the field: Clark spent 40 years with the Logan County Metropolitan Housing Authority, according to Peak of Ohio, and led the agency for decades as its executive director, overseeing housing programs and services for families across the county, a post he still held into 2026.

"There really aren't words meaningful enough to describe the man, and there certainly aren't words strong enough to describe his impact," Jason Brown, the head coach of the Bellefontaine football program Clark served for four decades, said after his death. "We are all blessed and grateful for every step we took with him on his journey." Brown closed his tribute simply: "Our love forever, Coach Clark."

Clark is survived by his wife, Kathryn, and their three sons, Brent Clark, Trea Clark and Matthew Haley. Eichholtz & Daring Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Bellefontaine is handling arrangements, and services had not yet been announced at the time of the station's report.

The measure of Gail Clark's life sits in plain sight in Logan County. It is there in the Chieftains program he helped shape across 40 seasons of Friday nights, in the generations of players he mentored, and in the county housing his agency kept over the heads of families for four decades. Few people get to be both the name on the sports page and the signature on the paperwork that keeps a neighbor housed. Clark managed to be both, in the same small city, for most of his 75 years.
