Evelyn Z. Wilson
Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court
Justice Evelyn Z. Wilson, a distinguished jurist who rose from a small-town upbringing to serve as the 102nd Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court, passed away on April 4, 2026, at the age of 66. Known for her sharp legal mind and unwavering commitment to the rule of law, she was an active member of the state's highest court at the time of her death.
Born in 1959 and raised in the small community of Smith Center, Kansas, Wilson came of age during an era when women were beginning to break significant barriers in the legal profession. She often credited her rural upbringing for shaping her defining Kansas work ethic, a detail noted in her Kansas Supreme Court Biography. She graduated magna cum laude from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Arts in business and economics. Continuing her education, she earned her Juris Doctor from Washburn University School of Law, where she served as a member of the Washburn Law Journal.
Wilson began her legal career in private practice, dedicating nearly 20 years to civil litigation and family law. Her work spanned from the small town of Oberlin to the urban center of Topeka, experiences that forged her pragmatic approach to justice. Governor Laura Kelly noted her professional merit by stating that Judge Wilson had a wealth of experience, a sharp legal mind, and a deep commitment to the rule of law. Kelly added that she was a fair and impartial jurist who would serve the people of Kansas with distinction. During this time, Wilson also shared her expertise as an adjunct professor at Washburn University School of Law, teaching courses on trial advocacy and legal writing.
Her judicial career began when Governor Kathleen Sebelius appointed her to the 3rd Judicial District Court in Shawnee County in 2004. She was elevated to Chief Judge of the 3rd Judicial District in 2014, taking on the responsibility of overseeing administrative duties for one of the busiest court systems in the state according to the Topeka Capital-Journal. Governor Laura Kelly later appointed Wilson to the Kansas Supreme Court on December 16, 2019, to fill the vacancy left by retiring Chief Justice Lawton Nuss. She was formally sworn in during a ceremony at the Kansas Judicial Center. Anchoring her judicial philosophy, Wilson once remarked that the law is not just a set of rules, but rather a promise of fairness to every citizen, regardless of their station in life.
Throughout her career, her integrity and civility earned her the Honorable E. Newton Vickers Professionalism Award from the Topeka Bar Association. She shared her life with her husband, Michael Wilson, and the couple resided in Topeka throughout her time on the bench. Following her passing, Governor Laura Kelly ordered flags at the Kansas State Capitol to be flown at half-staff in her honor, as announced by the Office of the Governor of Kansas. Chief Justice Marla Luckert remembered her as a dedicated public servant whose wisdom and kindness left an indelible mark on the Kansas judiciary, noting she approached every case with a profound sense of duty and a heart for justice.
Justice Wilson leaves behind a legacy as a jurist who masterfully bridged the gap between the administrative complexities of the court and the everyday lives of Kansas citizens. Her journey from Smith Center to the highest court in the state stands as a testament to her enduring Kansas work ethic. She will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to ensuring that the legal system remained accessible, fair, and grounded in the realities of the people it serves.
