Evan Hammond
Canadian radio host and hockey play-by-play broadcaster
Evan Hammond, the beloved voice of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and a prominent radio personality in Port Alberni, British Columbia, passed away suddenly on January 2, 2026, at the age of 45. His death, following a medical emergency on December 31, 2025, has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless community members he touched throughout his distinguished career. Hammond was widely known as "the Voice of the Valley" and "The Hammer," monikers that perfectly captured his deep connection to the community and his vibrant presence.
Hammond, a native of Flin Flon, Manitoba, initially pursued his passion for hockey as a goaltender, playing junior hockey with the Flin Flon Jets before transitioning to broadcasting. He dedicated over two decades to the airwaves of Port Alberni, notably as the morning show host on 93.3 The PEAK. His engaging conversations and commitment to sharing local history made him an integral part of daily life for many in the region.
His most enduring legacy, however, was his role as the play-by-play announcer for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), a position he held since the 2003-2004 season. Over his career, he called more than 1,350 BCHL games, bringing the excitement of junior hockey to generations of fans with his vivid and theatrical style, often described as a "masterclass in theatre of the mind." His passion for the sport was undeniable, as he once stated, "Hockey permeates all essences of my being."
Evan Hammond's excellence in broadcasting was recognized with three BCHL Broadcaster of the Year Awards, which he received in 2009, 2013, and shared in 2022. Beyond his professional accolades, he was cherished for his kindness, humor, and unwavering enthusiasm, particularly during dramatic Bulldogs victories. His impact extended far beyond the broadcast booth, fostering a sense of family among fans and players alike.
The Alberni Valley Bulldogs organization described Hammond as an "integral part of our team" whose "passion, professionalism, and unmistakable presence helped shape the identity of our organization." He was a trusted colleague, mentor, and friend who genuinely cared about the players, staff, and the Alberni Valley community. Evan Hammond is survived by his three children, Cally, Griffin, and Foster, who, along with his wider family, are grateful for the outpouring of community support.
His dedication to his craft and his community will be deeply missed, but his voice and the memories he created will resonate in the Alberni Valley for years to come. The hockey community and the residents of Port Alberni mourn the loss of a true local legend whose storytelling brought so much joy and connection.
