American football player and coach
Douglas Armstead Shively, a respected figure in American football as both a player and a coach, passed away on March 13, 2026, in Hiawassee, Georgia, just five days shy of his 89th birthday. Known affectionately to many as “Granddad,” Shively’s life was characterized by a deep love for sports, a commitment to service, and an unwavering faith.
Born on March 18, 1937, in Lexington, Kentucky, Shively grew up immersed in the world of athletics. His father, Bernie Shively, served as the athletic director at the University of Kentucky for many years. Following in his father's footsteps, Doug lettered in both football and baseball during his time at the University of Kentucky from 1956 to 1958.
Shively embarked on a distinguished coaching career that spanned several decades. He began at the high school and collegiate levels before making his mark in professional football. He served as an assistant coach in the National Football League for 19 seasons, holding positions with several prominent teams.
His NFL tenure included roles as a linebackers coach for the New Orleans Saints from 1974 to 1976 and for the Atlanta Falcons from 1977 to 1982. He also served as the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1985 and later returned to the Atlanta Falcons as the assistant head coach for defense from 1990 to 1993. In 1983, Shively took on a head coaching role for the Arizona Wranglers of the United States Football League (USFL).
Beyond the professional gridiron, Doug Shively found immense joy in his retirement years by dedicating his time to mentoring young people. He coached boys and girls in elementary and middle school in Towns County, Georgia, and Hayesville, North Carolina, where he became a beloved figure in the community.
Shively was a faithful member of McConnell Baptist Church, where he actively participated in worship and service, including delivering Meals on Wheels. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patsy, and their daughter, Kelly Shively. He is survived by his two sons, Chip and David, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
