David T. Lucey, a distinguished American newspaper executive and publisher, died on March 19, 2026, in Punta Gorda, Florida, at the age of 84. Throughout his extensive career, Lucey was a steadfast defender of community journalism and the free press. He left an indelible mark on the media landscape of New England, guiding publications through decades of change while maintaining a deep commitment to local reporting.
Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and raised in Andover, he was the son of William and Grace Lucey. He attended St. Augustine's Grammar School and the New Hampton School before pursuing higher education. Lucey ultimately earned a journalism degree from Suffolk University in Boston, laying the academic foundation for his lifelong dedication to the news industry.
Before entering the publishing world, Lucey served his country with distinction in the United States Air Force. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, he eventually rose to the rank of captain during the Vietnam War era. His military service took him to every continent, including deployments in Antarctica and Southeast Asia. For his dedication, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
In 1972, Lucey joined the Meriden Record-Journal, embarking on a 33-year career in newspaper management. He served as the General Manager of the Record-Journal Publishing Company in Connecticut and later became the Publisher of The Westerly Sun in Rhode Island. His leadership extended beyond his own newsrooms, as he also served as the President of the New England Newspaper Association, advocating for the broader regional press before his retirement in 2005.
Beyond his professional achievements, Lucey was deeply engaged in civic life. He held leadership roles with the Chambers of Commerce in Meriden, Wallingford, and Westerly, and served on the YMCA board of directors in both Connecticut and Rhode Island. He also served as President of the Rotary Club of Meriden and President of the Twin Isles Country Club in Florida. In his later years, he volunteered his time as a flight simulator instructor at the Military Heritage Museum in Punta Gorda.
A devoted family man, Lucey shared 59 years of marriage with his wife, Monica. Together, they raised four children and celebrated the growth of their family to include numerous grandchildren. He was an avid supporter of Boston professional sports teams and the University of Connecticut Huskies basketball program. Lucey was remembered by colleagues and loved ones alike as a mentor, a sportsman, and a pillar of the communities he called home.
