NFL Coach and Broadcaster
Dave McGinnis, the charismatic former Arizona Cardinals head coach and beloved Tennessee Titans broadcaster known as 'Coach Mac,' passed away on April 13, 2026, at the age of 74. A fixture of the NFL for nearly four decades, McGinnis was celebrated for his defensive brilliance, his signature 'Texas twang,' and an unwavering integrity that earned him respect across the league. He died at Ascension St. Thomas Midtown Hospital in Nashville following a period of declining health.
Born in Independence, Kansas, and raised in Snyder, Texas, McGinnis developed the high energy and grit that would define his life. He became an all-district athlete in football and baseball before graduating from Snyder High School in 1969. He then attended Texas Christian University, where he was a three-year starter as a defensive back. He earned a degree in business management from TCU in 1973. His transition from the playing field to the sideline began with a thirteen-year collegiate coaching run that included stops at TCU, Missouri, Indiana State, and Kansas State.
The NFL came calling in 1986. McGinnis entered the league as the linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears under Mike Ditka. He held that role for ten seasons, bridging the gap between the hard-nosed football of the 1980s and the modern era. His defensive mastery truly shone when he served as the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals from 1996 to 2000. During that span, he architected the defense that led to the first playoff appearance for the franchise in Arizona in 1998.
His moral compass was as legendary as his defensive schemes. In 1999, McGinnis famously declined the Chicago Bears head coaching position after the team prematurely announced his hiring before a contract was finalized, a principled stand documented by the Chicago Tribune. He walked away from the job, proving his integrity in the high-stakes world of professional football. A year later, he was promoted to head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Initially serving as the interim coach, he led the team through the 2003 season. Arizona Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill noted that as Dave often said, he was a 'ballcoach' through and through, and no one ever filled that role with more passion, enthusiasm, and charisma.
During his time in Arizona, McGinnis formed a profound bond with Pat Tillman. He coached Tillman for the entirety of the safety's NFL career. When Tillman made the historic decision to step away from football and join the U.S. Army, McGinnis served as the spokesperson who announced the enlistment to the world, a moment shared by the Arizona Cardinals. It was an event of immense gravity, handled with the utmost respect by a coach who understood the weight of his player's sacrifice.
McGinnis joined the Tennessee Titans in 2004 as a linebackers coach and eventually rose to the position of Assistant Head Coach. He later served as Assistant Head Coach for the St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams from 2012 to 2016 under Jeff Fisher. In 2017, he transitioned to the broadcast booth, becoming the color analyst for the Tennessee Titans Radio Network alongside Mike Keith. His nostalgic voice and deep football knowledge made him an instant favorite among listeners. Titans Controlling Owner Amy Adams Strunk expressed that her heart ached with the loss of Coach Mac, who was so much more than a coach and broadcaster, adding that he was family.
Hospitalized since March 4, 2026, McGinnis received visits and messages from dozens of former players and coaching colleagues in his final weeks. Former NFL head coach Jeff Fisher recalled those final days in a statement to the Tennessee Titans, noting that Mac treated people so well, and made everyone feel like they were important. Fisher observed that even in the hospital, people would stop by to see him, and he would ask about their families, proving that everyone loved Mac.
Ultimately, the legacy of Dave McGinnis is defined by the lives he touched. He coached eight Pro Football Hall of Famers during his career, including Mike Singletary, Aeneas Williams, and Emmitt Smith, yet he treated the superstar and the stadium worker with the exact same warmth and respect. He was the ultimate ballcoach, a mentor whose integrity and booming Texas voice will echo through the halls of the NFL forever.
