Brenda Stone arrived on All That as words on a page, but the voice belonged to Christy Knowings. Knowings, the actress and comedian who spent three seasons giving Nickelodeon's young sketch audience a gallery of recurring characters, died at 46 on August 11, 2026, at a hospital in the Los Angeles area, according to TMZ.

That division of labor mattered to Knowings. In a retrospective oral history, she told Complex that the writers created the characters, while the performers decided how those characters sounded and moved. Brenda Stone was her clearest example. The writers did not expect the voice Knowings chose. "They just gave me the script and I went with it," she said. That choice showed how much a young performer could add to a character that began as a script.

Knowings's route to Nickelodeon began with another sketch program. She said she was working as an extra on Rosie O'Donnell's And Now This when she met producers from All That. Within about a week, she was called to audition, performed a set of characters and was asked whether she would move to Los Angeles. A Sesame Workshop biography of her twin brother, actor Chris Knowings, also credited him with helping her land the All That role that launched her television career.

She joined All That in 1997. Across three seasons, she played Penny Lane and Jessica in the recurring Whateverrr!!! sketch with Amanda Bynes, among other parts. Each script gave her a new voice or comic premise to interpret, sometimes opposite one of the program's celebrity guests. Knowings recalled performing a Whateverrr!!! sketch with Kobe Bryant as a particular honor. Her character fainted in the scene, and Knowings joked that she understood the reaction.

Her Nickelodeon work extended beyond the sketch stage. On November 9, 1998, she joined Lori Beth Denberg and Kevin Kopelow as a celebrity panelist for a family-themed episode of Figure It Out, trying to identify the hidden talents of children and their fathers. She later crossed back into the All That world as a guest in the program's 2019 revival.

Knowings also made room for work beyond the series that introduced her to a generation. She appeared in three episodes of Sesame Street with Chris, playing an on-screen sister opposite her real-life twin. Her final acting appearance was reported as a 2011 episode. Their shared appearances put the siblings together on television years after Chris had helped her secure her All That opportunity.

Music became another way for Knowings to create through sound. She wrote and performed "Being" under the name Cikae for the 2010 film Mother and Child, according to the film's song credits collected by FilmMusic.com. A decade later, she released "To the World." TV Insider described that 2020 track as part of her shift from screen acting toward music.

The news of her death brought tributes from former colleagues. Kenan Thompson, her All That castmate, called her "one of the funniest people out here" and sent love to her family, as reported by The Daily Beast. His tribute centered the humor she had brought to the set they shared.

Knowings's work remains in the voices she invented for Brenda Stone, Penny Lane, Jessica and the rest of her All That ensemble, in the Sesame Street episodes she shared with Chris, and in the songs "Being" and "To the World." Each records the same creative instinct: take the part or the page that was handed to her, find its sound and make it unmistakably hers.
