Charles S. Dean Sr., a revered figure in Florida politics and law enforcement, passed away on February 23, 2026, at the age of 86. Dean dedicated over three decades of his life to public service, leaving an indelible mark on Citrus County and the State of Florida. His career spanned from a distinguished tenure as Citrus County Sheriff to impactful roles in both the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 31, 1939, Dean pursued higher education with a focus on criminal justice, earning degrees from Central Florida Community College, Florida State University, and Rollins College. He also proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. These foundational experiences prepared him for a life committed to community safety and public welfare.
Dean's commitment to his community was evident early in his career. He was first elected Sheriff of Citrus County in 1980, serving four consecutive terms until 1996. During his sixteen years as sheriff, he was recognized statewide for his crime-prevention initiatives and leadership within the Florida Sheriffs Association, where he also served as president. His leadership modernized the agency and fostered a community-centric policing model.
Following his impactful career in law enforcement, Dean transitioned to state politics. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2002, serving until 2007, and subsequently to the Florida Senate, where he represented various districts from 2007 until his retirement in 2016. Throughout his legislative career, Senator Dean was a strong advocate for public safety, environmental conservation, healthcare, and education.
In recognition of his lifetime of service, the College of Central Florida honored his legacy in 2022 by naming the Charles S. Dean Sr. Educational Center. Dean was known as a dedicated family man, survived by his wife, Judy, and their two children. His profound influence and unwavering dedication to the people of Florida will be deeply missed.
