Bruce Osbourne Butterfield
Bruce Osbourne Butterfield was born on January 5, 1941, in Johnson City, Tennessee, to Mondel and Eda Butterfield. He passed peacefully at home on January 29, 2026, after bravely living with Parkinson’s Disease for more than twelve years.
Bruce built a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Linda, making their home in Maryland, Florida, and most recently Utah.
A graduate of MIT in Electrical Engineering (1962), Bruce was a pioneer in early micro computing. His work included designing hardware systems at Johns Hopkins University, contributing to IBM’s Token Ring technology, developing tools for dolphin research in Florida, and helping engineer some of the earliest automated warehouse systems. His mind was brilliant, innovative, and endlessly curious.
Yet his greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband and a proud father to his four sons — Paul, Matthew, Mark, and Luke. He leaves behind eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with one more eagerly anticipated.
Bruce was gentle, kind, and quietly faithful. He served in many church callings over the years and lived a life rooted in service, integrity, and steady devotion. He loved music, good conversation, and teaching by example.
His family finds comfort in the faith he carried and the hope he taught them — that families are forever.
The loved ones of Bruce Butterfield welcome any tribute you wish to share in their memory.
