Brian O'Shea, a distinguished figure in Irish politics and a dedicated public servant, passed away on January 28, 2026, at the age of 81. Born in Waterford, Ireland, on December 9, 1944, O'Shea dedicated his life to serving his community and country, leaving a significant legacy in the political landscape.
O'Shea's career in public service began in local government, where he served on Tramore Town Council, Waterford City Council, and Waterford County Council from 1979 to 1993. His commitment to local issues and his ability to connect with constituents quickly marked him as a rising political force. He was first elected to Seanad Éireann in 1987, representing the Industrial and Commercial Panel.
In 1989, O'Shea achieved a major milestone by being elected as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Waterford constituency, a seat he held for over two decades until his retirement in 2011. During his tenure in Dáil Éireann, he served with distinction in various capacities, including as Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine from 1993 to 1994, and later as Minister of State at the Department of Health from 1994 to 1997. In these roles, he focused on areas such as food safety, public health, and disability services.
Beyond his ministerial roles, O'Shea was a prominent voice for his party, serving as spokesperson on numerous portfolios, including Defence, Education, Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, Communications, Sport, Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, and the Irish language.
