Benjamin James Sadock
Psychiatrist, educator, and co-author of a seminal textbook
Dr. Benjamin James Sadock, a distinguished psychiatrist, prolific author, and revered educator, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on December 22, 1933, in New York, Dr. Sadock dedicated his life to advancing the field of psychiatry, leaving an indelible mark through his clinical practice, extensive writings, and profound commitment to teaching.
Dr. Sadock was widely recognized as the co-author of "Kaplan & Sadock's Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry," a monumental work considered the gold standard reference for mental health professionals globally. This seminal textbook, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in May 2026, has been translated into numerous languages and has guided generations of clinicians and students. His contributions to psychiatric literature extended beyond this single work, encompassing over 140 academic books and papers that shaped contemporary understanding and practice in the field.
His academic journey began with a Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College in 1959. Following his medical education, Dr. Sadock held various significant positions, including an instructor role at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He then spent a formative period at New York Medical College in Valhalla, where he rose through the ranks from instructor to associate professor and ultimately to professor of psychiatry by 1975.
In 1980, Dr. Sadock brought his expertise to New York University (NYU) in New York City, where he served as a professor of psychiatry and director of Student Mental Health Services. His leadership at NYU further expanded as he took on roles such as vice-chairperson of the department in 1984 and director of undergraduate education and co-director of graduate medical education from 1986 to 1995. He was also honored as the Menas S. Gregory Professor of Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine.
Beyond his institutional roles, Dr. Sadock was a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, serving as an associate examiner for over two decades. His dedication to patient care was as profound as his commitment to education, earning him admiration for his clinical expertise and his rare gift as a teacher. He believed strongly in the combined efficacy of pharmacologic treatment and psychotherapy, emphasizing the enduring importance of the doctor-patient relationship.
Dr. Sadock is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Virginia Alcott Sadock, with whom he also collaborated professionally, and their children, Dr. James William Sadock and Dr. Victoria Sadock Gregg. He was a cherished husband, father, brother, and grandfather, and his passing leaves a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched and improved throughout his distinguished career.
