Musician, songwriter, record producer, record label owner
Augie Meyers, the legendary American musician whose distinctive Vox Continental organ sound became a cornerstone of Tex-Mex rock and roll, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, at the age of 85. A founding member of both the iconic Sir Douglas Quintet and the Grammy-winning supergroup Texas Tornados, Meyers left an indelible mark on the music world with his innovative style and prolific career. His passing in Bulverde, Texas, marks the end of an era for a true Texas legend.
Born August Meyers on May 31, 1940, in San Antonio, Texas, he developed a profound connection to music early in life. In the early 1960s, Meyers forged a lifelong musical partnership with Doug Sahm, co-founding the Sir Douglas Quintet. It was with this group that Meyers introduced his signature reverb-drenched organ riffs, which propelled their 1965 hit, "She's About a Mover," to international acclaim.
The Sir Douglas Quintet continued to achieve success with songs like "Mendocino" and "Nuevo Laredo," solidifying their unique blend of rock, pop, and Tex-Mex influences. Beyond his work with the Quintet, Meyers embarked on a solo career, releasing over a dozen albums that showcased his versatility and songwriting prowess. He also established several of his own record labels, including the Texas Re-Cord Company, Superbeet Records, White Boy Records, and El Sendero, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit within the music industry.
In 1989, Meyers reunited with Doug Sahm, alongside Freddy Fender and Flaco Jiménez, to form the Tex-Mex supergroup, the Texas Tornados. This formidable quartet brought their vibrant sound to a wider audience, earning a Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Performance in 1990 for their hit "Soy de San Luis." The Texas Tornados became a celebrated act, performing for presidents and at major events like Farm Aid, further cementing Meyers' status as a musical innovator.
Meyers' talent as a session musician was highly sought after, leading to collaborations with numerous esteemed artists. Notably, he contributed his distinctive organ playing to Bob Dylan's critically acclaimed albums "Time Out of Mind" in 1997 and "Love and Theft" in 2001. "Time Out of Mind" went on to win three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, with Dylan himself acknowledging Meyers' crucial contribution to the album's unique sound.
Augie Meyers was often referred to as the "secret sauce" of Tex-Mex rock and roll, a testament to his singular style and profound influence. His ability to fuse diverse musical genres and his iconic keyboard work inspired countless musicians and left an enduring legacy that continues to resonate in the hearts of fans and fellow artists alike. He passed away peacefully with his wife, Sara, by his side.
