Professional football wide receiver
Arthur Marshall attempted two NFL passes, completing both for a combined 111 yards and two touchdowns. Marshall, the former Georgia wide receiver who played five seasons for the Denver Broncos and New York Giants, died on September 2, 2026, at 57, according to Pro Football Archives.
The longer of those two throws came on December 6, 1992. A wide receiver by trade, Marshall connected with Cedric Tillman for an 81-yard touchdown that gave Denver a 27-24 fourth-quarter lead against Dallas, according to the Denver Broncos. His only pass the following season went for a 30-yard touchdown. The rare passing line was tucked inside a career built chiefly on running routes and returning punts.
Born at Fort Gordon on April 29, 1969, Marshall grew up between the military post and nearby Augusta. Football first carried him from Hephzibah High School to the University of Georgia. The Bulldogs listed him as a letterman in 1988, 1989 and 1991. As a freshman, he caught an 81-yard touchdown pass from Greg Talley against William & Mary, giving him another long play that would retain a place in Georgia's record book.
Marshall started at split end for Georgia's 9-3 Independence Bowl championship team in 1991. In the bowl victory over Arkansas, he caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Eric Zeier in the first quarter as the Bulldogs built an early lead and won 24-15. University of Georgia Athletics records also placed him among the Bulldogs who went on to the Senior Bowl, where he appeared as a flanker in 1992.
Denver gave Marshall his NFL start in 1992. He caught 26 passes for 493 yards and a touchdown as a rookie, while also returning 33 punts for 349 yards. The Pro Football Writers of America chose him as one of the two wide receivers on its 1992 All-Rookie Team. He followed with 28 catches and two receiving touchdowns in his second season.
The NFL's transaction record shows that Denver traded Marshall to the Giants in April 1994. He remained with New York through the 1996 season, adding a receiving touchdown in 1995 and continuing to return punts. Across five seasons, he appeared in 68 games, caught 87 passes for 1,267 yards and four touchdowns, and returned 59 punts. The receiving totals measured his regular work; the perfect two-for-two passing line supplied the twist that set his career apart.
After football, Marshall worked in real estate development, home building and business consulting. He also found his way back to the school where his football path began. Hephzibah inducted him into its hall of fame in 2023, and Marshall also helped coach at his alma mater and supported the community with gifts and financial assistance. Head coach Daniel Dorsey told WFXG that Marshall made a difference on offense, defense and special teams and called him "a special player all around."
The family's funeral-home notice described a life centered on family and faith. Marshall was a husband to Lena, father to Arthur and Aubern, and bonus father to Giana and Alex. He was the son of Rosemary Marshall, brother to Marvin and six other siblings, and grandfather to six grandsons. Away from work and football, he watched movies, spent time with his family and took evening walks along the beach.
Marshall's football record preserved a striking symmetry: an 81-yard catch for Georgia and an 81-yard touchdown throw for Denver. His name also remained at Hephzibah, in its hall of fame and in the program where he also helped coach. Those fields, the Bulldogs' record book, the Broncos' history and the family at the center of his life carry the specific shape of what he built.
