Anthony appointed Commonwealth Solicitor-General
career
In 1964, at the age of 39, Anthony Mason was appointed Solicitor-General of the Commonwealth by the Menzies government. He was the first person to hold the office in a standalone capacity, as it had previously been combined with the role of Secretary of the Attorney-General's Department. In this role, he became an architect of Australia's new administrative law framework, helping establish the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, the ombudsman, and freedom of information provisions.
