She served in the British government under two prime ministers, sat in two Shadow Cabinets, and after leaving Parliament became one of British television's most familiar faces. Ann Widdecombe died on July 9, 2026, at her home in Haytor, Devon. She was 78.

Widdecombe was born in Bath, Somerset, on October 4, 1947, the daughter of a Ministry of Defence civil servant. She read Latin at the University of Birmingham, then philosophy, politics and economics at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, before working at Unilever and as an administrator at the University of London. In 1987 she entered the House of Commons as Conservative MP for Maidstone, a Kent constituency she represented, later as Maidstone and the Weald, for the next twenty-three years, as reported by LBC.

Her rise through government was steady. Widdecombe served as a junior minister for social security from 1990, became Minister of State for Employment in 1994, and the following year moved to the Home Office as Minister of State for Prisons, a post in which she visited every prison in the United Kingdom. After the Conservatives lost power in 1997, she joined William Hague's Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Health Secretary and then Shadow Home Secretary, before announcing in 2007 that she would stand down at the next general election.

In 1993, partway through her ministerial career, Widdecombe left the Church of England after its vote to ordain women priests and was received into the Roman Catholic Church, as later recorded by Independent Catholic News. Two decades later, in January 2013, Pope Benedict XVI made her a Dame of the Order of St Gregory the Great, in a ceremony at Speaker's House in the House of Commons recognising her contribution to public life.

When she left the Commons in 2010, Widdecombe did not step out of public view. That year she competed on the eighth series of Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with professional dancer Anton Du Beke, and remained in the competition for ten weeks. "I had the most brilliant time with Ann on Strictly Come Dancing," Du Beke said in a tribute reported by Heat. "She became a real friend. She was fun. She was upbeat. She was positive." She went on to appear on Celebrity Big Brother in 2018, host episodes of Have I Got News for You, and publish a 2013 memoir, Strictly Ann: The Autobiography.

Widdecombe returned to elected politics in 2019, winning a seat in the European Parliament for South West England as a candidate for Nigel Farage's Brexit Party. "When Ann Widdecombe decided to stand for the Brexit Party in the snap 2019 European Elections, it was a big moment and huge boost," Farage said in a tribute carried by the Enfield Independent. "The voters loved her. She played a decisive role in getting Brexit over the line and will be missed by us all." She left the European Parliament when the UK withdrew from the EU in early 2020, and rejoined Farage's political project in 2023, serving as Reform UK's immigration and justice spokesperson until her death.

Tributes crossed party lines. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called her "a very fun and feisty woman who spoke her mind," while Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to her as a distinctive figure in British politics for many years and praised the conviction and dedication with which she served her country.

Widdecombe's public record is not one single achievement but a run of them: a prisons brief she treated as work to be done in person, two Shadow Cabinet posts, a European Parliament seat won at 71, and a television career that carried her, tailored suit and all, to audiences who had never sat through Prime Minister's Questions. Her memoir, Strictly Ann, and the ten weeks of ballroom footage from 2010 stand alongside the parliamentary record of a politician who kept working, in one form or another, for more than fifty years.
