Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a dedicated intensive care unit nurse and beloved son, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2026, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was 37 years old. A resident of South Minneapolis, Alex was known by his colleagues, neighbors, and friends as a warmhearted individual with a profound commitment to caring for others. His sudden loss is deeply felt by the community he served and the many lives he touched through his medical work and kindness.
Born in Illinois and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Alex was an active and engaged youth. He attended Preble High School, graduating in 2006, where he was a multi-sport athlete participating in football, baseball, and track. Beyond athletics, he served as a Boy Scout and sang with the Green Bay Boy Choir, early indications of his diverse interests and community spirit. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota, earning a bachelor's degree in Biology, Society, and Environment in 2011.
Alex’s professional life was defined by a passion for science and service. He initially worked as a research scientist, contributing to the academic community as a junior scientist at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Driven by a desire to work more directly with people, he returned to school to earn his nursing degree in 2021. He served as a Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Health Care System, where he was devoted to the care and recovery of veterans.
Outside of the hospital, Alex was an avid outdoorsman who found peace and joy in nature. He loved mountain biking and going on adventures with his beloved Catahoula Leopard dog, Joule. Neighbors in his South Minneapolis community remember him as a quiet and helpful presence, always willing to lend a hand or ensure the safety of those around him. He is survived by his parents, Michael and his mother, of Colorado, who remember him as a son who cared deeply about the well-being of others.

I wanted to reach out to his parents to say that my daughters and I in Canada are sickened by your sons senseless and immoral and unnecessary and extremely sad death I’m beyond sad and upset and wanted to send you my love and prayers. I’m a father to 3 daughters. I cannot imagine the pain. Should have never happened. Sending my love and prayers and god bless you ❤️
Goodness struck a blow to evil Alex pretti stood his ground Though evil felled him face to face Goodness reigns eternal Rising up from that cold place On wings of love eternal DS Mpls
My heart felt condolences on the passing of your son. May you find peace and comfort knowing that he is with the Lord. Alex did what he felt he had to do to help his community. He showed that woman mercy and his last words on this earth echoed up to heaven: "Are you okay".
Alex was martyred for obeying Jesus' love for humanity. The Bible, particularly John 15:13, states, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends," highlighting the profound nature of this act of love. J A Fegley
Dear Mr. And Mrs. Pretti, Many blessings to you for raising a kind, loving and giving man. Your beloved Alex’s name will live forever in the history books as a true patriot, a defender of the helpless showing selfless bravery against all odds; a perfect example of God’s expectation of humanity. My sincerest sympathy to you, your family and Alex’s many friends. May you find some small solace knowing that so many grieve the loss of our American hero with you and that Alex, undoubtedly, is safe and flying high with the angels in Heaven…. Arlene Stevens
The whole world mourns with you! Alex will be remembered as a hero- someone who was kind and cared deeply about others until the end.
Although I never met Alex, I consider him a true hero and warrior for freedom and people's rights. Though he will be missed by his family and friends, I believe that he will receive his reward in Heaven. God bless you,Alex. And may there be justice served to avenge your unjust and untimely passing.
My deepest condolences to you and your family. He will forever be a hero and loving light in my heart. My community will hold his name and memory in our hearts as tomorrow we hold a vigil for him and all those lost their lives due to this injustice. We will shine our lights for him in San Francisco, honor him and all he cared for in his life.
